M-Commerce: Platforms to sell via smartphones

2016-03-15 09:40:45

M-Commerce is nothing but the logical evolution of e-commerce. The social phenomenon of online purchase has experienced a significant evolution in the last few years. Everyone is aware that users have mobile phones with them in each and every moment of their lives. As a consequence, companies feel the necessity of taking the purchase experience, previously moved from physical shops to computers, from computers to mobile devices. Thus appears m-commerce.

M-commerce: from the origins to the present

Believe it or not, the first purchase made via a text message took place in Helsinki in 1997, through Coca-Cola’s vending machines. But the determinant factor that actually boosted the development of m-commerce platforms was the fact that companies realized the importance of mobile devices in users’ purchase habits. For example, they noticed an increase in the use of phones during an offline purchase to check prizes online.

A text message by a clothing company, an e-mail with exclusive discounts and offers, or a newsletter with trendy cinemas, any of them can set the beginning of a purchase experience from a mobile device. But users themselves can also be the ones to start the m-commerce experience through an Internet search, looking for websites adapted to the visualization on mobile devices or through the download of apps exclusively designed for a brand or company.

In recent times, purchases done through m-commerce platforms increased dramatically. In the case of the retail channel, 6 out of 10 sales were done through it. However, according to the I Study on Mobile Commerce in the Spanish Fashion sector, published by Corpora360 and Acotex, only 29% brands have their own app.

Apart from the increase in smartphone consumption, the demand of paid apps, technological developments in devices or the increase in user confidence with regard to online purchases, we find reasons that are much more logical.

M-commerce platforms allow users to experience a fast, simple and straightforward purchase, made anywhere and at any time, without limitations.

These are not the only advantages: m-commerce has also become a way for the brand to know customers. Purchases via mobile phone offer a great amount of information about consumers since, unlike other devices, smartphones are generally used by one only individual.

This information helps companies generate a unique purchase experience for its users, achieving a higher level of engagement and a higher number of commercial transactions.
